What Does DRS mean?

DRS - Drag Reduction System

Baru-baru ni semangat duk layan F1 - Formula 1, kalau kat KL jarang tengok tv, bile balik rumah mak memang rajin tengok tv. Haha ! :D . DRS?

Drag Reduction System - DRS
*In Action*

Also known as adjustable rear wings, DRS (Drag Reduction System) rear wings allow the driver to adjust the wing between two pre-determined settings from the cockpit. The system's availability is electronically governed - it can be used at any time in practice and qualifying (unless a driver is on wet-weather tyres), but during the race can only be activated when a driver is less than one second behind another car at pre-determined points on the track. The system is then deactivated once the driver brakes. In combination with KERS, it is designed to boost overtaking. Also like KERS, it isn't compulsory.

How Drag Reduction System works?
The DRS system opens up a letterbox-shaped gap in the rear wing of the car reducing drag and allowing the car to slide through the air quicker.

How and when DRS will be used in races?
Proximity to the car in front is detected before the straight on which the wing may be activated. If the car behind is less than one second behind (this is judged by the installed timing loops in the track) the driver is told that his system is “armed”, however, he can only use it when he reaches a particular point on the following straight line. This point is likely 600-800 meters before the breaking point for the following corner.

There are marks on the track to show the area where proximity is being detected and a line across the track at the point where the drivers whose system is armed may deploy it.

Now interestingly the television broadcasters are also sent a signal each time a system is armed and this is be displayed to the viewers (This is some treat for us :)).

Based on simulation stats’ it appears that the difference between a car using the wing(DRS) and one not using it is likely to be in the region of 10-12km/h at the end of the straight.

This is what experts say about New Drag Reduction System

Michael Schumacher says the Drag Reduction Systems has made overtaking easy in 2011 and also it has made things more exciting. Michael believes getting into the right position and tyre strategy will still play a big part in it.

Roseberg – It still depends on race strategies and Pirelli tyres.

Charlie Whiting – It has made things interesting as it helps Lapped drivers pass leaders.
